The ProECU Programming Kit can be used by car enthusiasts and owner clubs alike to both diagnose and program a wide variety of vehicles. At its simplest, the programming kit can be used for diagnostics and data-logging. However, its most impressive feature is to allow EcuTek Master Tuners to remotely tune customer vehicles.
If any fine tuning is required, the customer can data-log the car and send the logs to the Master Tuner for their scrutiny and advice. The programming kit is available in both USB and Bluetooth versions.

Determine the year, model and powertrain in your Ford as well as any other modifications previously made to your car or truck. This is important because not all engines can be flashed, generally it becomes prohibitively difficult for pre Fords. Generally flash software will only work within a specific family of engines so you need to buy the right brand and model of flasher.
Car modifications may necessitate a trip to a dynometer to properly calibrate the flashing software. Dynometers measure the power output of a car and require the assistance of an expert to use this data with a ECU flasher. Determine which flasher system you need for your Ford.
Each has its advantages and drawback, though not all options are available for all engines and you will need to research your specific powertrain. The software flash is the easiest to install, in most cases, with the software loaded onto the pre-existing electronics. A newer option of a plug-in flasher is available, whereby the flashed chip is plugged in between the wires going from the ECU to the engine. This is the easiest to install, though not many cars are currently supported.
Install the software flasher by plugging in the flasher module to the diagnostic port on your Ford. On most Fords the port will be located under the driver side dash. Some require the car to be off, some require it to be on. Once it is plugged in, follow the instructions included in the kit. These usually require entering codes for your chosen level of performance because the flasher is capable of variable levels of horsepower and torque boosting.
This method is reversible, in most circumstances, though some flashes can only be reset by special machines at dealerships. Install the plug-in chip by opening the ECU box after turning off your Ford. The kit will tell you where to plug in the chip — usually the diagnostic port.
To install the solder chip, you typically must remove another chip or attach the chip at a junction. Exercise caution and, if you have any doubts, seek expert assistance. You can damage your Ford if you connect the wrong wires with solder. This method is irreversible. Install the plug-in inline flasher — which resides on a chip in a special wire. Locate the control wire from the ECU to the engine. The car needs to be off when you plug the wire in. Turn on the car and you should have an instant power gain.

This module compares the VIN number of the car between different electronic modules in the car. If the VIN number isn't consistent, the car will not start. Also the EWS has a password feature called the "Rolling Code" which changes between the modules every time that the car is turned off.

Every model year and every running change meant another PROM had to be created. Every field fix or recall for an emissions or driveability problem created more part numbers to keep track of. It's all done digitally with the proper access codes and input data. Today, almost all PCMs have reprogramming capabilities so changes and upgrades can be made if needed. As we said earlier, PCMs may need to be reprogrammed for several reasons.

A reflash may also be required if the factory settings for the OBD II self-diagnostics turns out to be overly sensitive -- especially after a few years of operation. The same goes for driveability. What works fine in a brand new car many not work so great after 50, ormiles or real world driving.
Changing the fuel enrichment curve, spark timing or some emission control function slightly may be necessary to eliminate a hesitation, spark knock or other condition that develops over time.
For example, on certain GM vehicles the Check Engine light comes on and sets a code P that indicates a a fault in the position of the exhaust gas recirculation EGR valve. Cleaning or replacing the EGR valve and clearing the code does not fix the vehicle because the code usually returns. When the PCM commands the EGR valve to open to check its operation, it isn't allowing enough time for the valve to respond. A brand new valve takes only about 50 milliseconds to open but an older valve may take up to milliseconds or longer -- which isn't long enough to cause a real NOX emissions failure but is long enough to trip a fault code.GM Programming.
